Sure, a broken dental implant may have you freaked out, but it can be fixed.dental implants

A dental implant is one of the most durable and long-lasting restorations you can get, and no other restoration looks or functions like a real tooth the way implants do. Once you go through the lengthy treatment process you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful new restoration. Of course, problems can occur during the implant treatment process and even after and it’s important that you turn to our Barrington, IL, dentists, Drs. Douglas, Chase and Connor Pennino, right away when it does.

In most cases, when we talk about a dental implant breaking we are talking about the dental crown, the restoration that is cemented over top of the implant. While the implant is made from titanium and naturally fuses together with the jawbone this means that the implant itself could last the rest of your life if you care for your smile properly. Of course, a dental crown isn’t designed to last forever.

Sure, a crown is made from a durable tooth-colored material like porcelain or ceramic but it doesn’t mean that it can’t break or fall off. Unlike the implant, which lies underneath the gums where it’s part of the jawbone, the crown is more exposed to damage. If you cracked or damaged the dental crown or if the crown fell off it’s important that you call our Barrington family dentists right away for care. If the crown just fell out it can be cemented back into place; however, if the damage is extensive we may need to replace the crown with a new one.

In many cases, a dental crown is attached to the implant by a piece known as an abutment. The abutment’s sole purpose is to be able to connect the dental crown, which sits above the gums, with the implant that lies under the gums. In some cases, a direct blow or trauma to the mouth could lead to the abutment breaking or becoming damaged. If this happens it’s important that you seek dental care right away.
