Signs You May Need a Tooth Extracted
Are You in Need of a Tooth Extraction?
If your teeth are crowded, diseased, or have gone through some sort of trauma, you may need a tooth extraction. Drs. Douglas and Chase Pennino in Barrington, IL, perform dental extractions and want you to know the following information regarding the procedures:
What Causes a Tooth to Need an Extraction? What is the Process Like?
Tooth decay, periodontal disease, and impact trauma are the primary reasons why a tooth will need to be pulled.
Though there are always risks of tooth decay and periodontal disease, they can both be greatly reduced through the following measures:
- Flossing before bed and making sure to floss between each tooth and in hard to reach places like molars.
- Quitting bad habits such as smoking, chewing tobacco, and drinking excessive amounts of coffee and tea.
- Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each and holding the brush at a 40-degree angle to improve your chances of having healthy teeth.
If trauma from a sport and/or overcrowded teeth are the reason you need a tooth extraction, then your doctor will need to examine the severity of the situation and schedule an appointment for the tooth extraction. Then they'll administer an anesthetic to numb your mouth before the procedure. Your doctor will extract whatever is left of the natural tooth and stitch the extraction area. Finally, they'll apply gauze to stop bleeding and help with blood clot formation.
To ensure a speedy and healthy recovery, avoid eating, or drinking for a few hours. Don't use a straw when you can drink, and ice the tooth extraction area. Use pain relievers if needed and avoid smoking or drinking alcoholic beverage after the procedure. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water for constant disinfection, and call your Barrington doctor if you're suffering from severe pain as it may be a dry socket (meaning blood hasn't clotted properly).
